KENPO KARATE
Kenpo Karate is a very old form of Chinese boxing (Kung Fu). Translated, Kenpo means Fist Law. Ken
fist -, po law. Karate means Empty Hands, Kara empty, Te hands.
Kenpo Karate is a well rounded system. It incorporates a balanced blend of Chinese hand movements and
kicking techniques.
Kenpo also incorporates many Jiu-Jitsu (suppression) and Judo (throwing) techniques into it's system.
These can be used when another person grabs or attempts to grab you.
Kenpo Karate will hone your body and mind to a fine edge. In Kenpo, you are trained beyond the
physical methods of self defense. Your mind will be trained as well. This is very important because many
physical situations can be overcome by using your mind as your defense weapon. The highest level of self
defense in the Martial Arts is the ability to defeat your opponent by using your mind instead of using your
fists. Kenpo Masters pride themselves in this.
BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art indigenous to Brazil. It was founded and developed by the Gracie family.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu prefers bringing an opponent to the ground and then relying on grappling techniques
(submission wrestling) to subdue the opponent utilizing holds, arm locks and leg locks. This strategy takes
away the advantage of an opponent with superior striking abilities. It can also mitigate the advantage of a
stronger and much larger opponent relying on wrestling or grappling.
ARE ALL KARATE SYSTEMS THE SAME ? No, all Karate systems have their own styles. Kenpo, unlike other systems, is balanced.
Other systems are noted for their hand techniques, but are weak in their kicks. Some have very good kicking techniques,
but the hands moves are limited. Very few systems train your Mind and this is the most important part of the Martial Arts.
At Fairhaven Martial Arts Center you will be taught a Traditional Martial Art that uses modern day training methods.
TOURNAMENTS
We do participate in Karate and Grappling tournaments for the sport aspect of the Martial Arts.
Tournaments can be fun and exciting if they are put into the proper perspective.
Tournaments can encourage fair play, good sportsmanship, boost studio morale, and is a good family event
for a day.
We do not require anyone to compete but we do offer special classes to help students who
choose to enter.
F.M.A.C. sponsors it's own semi-annual Karate Tournament!
